    Keeping One's Mouth Shut

We have a house full of people right now.  Luckily, I bowed out of the aquarium visit by having a "headache".  So the house is peaceful again for a few hours.

The one family with the 6 year old triplets do not believe in spanking.  Instead, their idea of parenting is screaming at high decibels constantly, even for little things.  There are plenty of threats, but no follow-through, just more screaming.  I know there's a million ways to raise kiddos and they turn out fine.  But, I'm having a hard time keeping my tongue in check right now.  I keep making excuses to leave my own house.  It's just one week, but I'm close to calling that nanny lady on tv.  Any takers on the best way to handle unruly guests?

Don't get me wrong.  I'm a screamer, too.  But when no one else in your house is a screamer, it kind of takes the fun out of it.  Big Smile

Geez, I don't know. I guess my thought is to continue to bite your tongue. Keeping family peace is invaluable. Hopefully they will see how well behaved your daughter is and will make a comment or ask for advice. Then you can offer some. However, if they do not solicit advice, I would not offer any since that may end up causing a rift. At the same time, I think bowing out of the activities or leaving the home is okay to do. If they were staying longer than a week, my advice would likely be different since it is *your* home. Good luck.

On second thought, maybe you ought to just join in the screaming--it may be cathartic Smile

You have my deepest sympathy.  My sister is a screamer too.  When she and her boys fly in to visit, I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors so the screaming is less annoying.  Amazing how often, too, I need to run a quick errand by myself or visit a "sick" friend for a couple of hours.   But being outside helps the most.

what's with the moms these days???..i observe this "scream management" style more and more with the younger generation of parents.... I prefer to call it "lazy parenting"... i.e., just sit in a chair and scream, but really don't enforce anything. and the kids turn into brats. oh good luck. i guess just bite your tongue and pray for the week to end soon. and don't invite those people back. (kinda makes you understand why public school teachers dislike their jobs so much...they gotta deal with these kids 5 days per week)

Everyone is gone and we are now back to our quiet little house.  But one thing keeps nagging me. One of the triplets is obese.  She has found comfort in her world of screaming by eating.  Her mom gives her chips for breakfast and she allowed her to have 7 bowls of ice cream after dinner one night.  The kiddo screams if she doesn't get her food, and the parents just give in.  The entire scene is gnawing at me.  Would you say something to the parents about this or would you still keep quiet?

Unless they ask, just pray. Sometimes people just don't want to hear it...even when they ask. But if you feel God's prodding, go about it very gently.

I gotta go with the pp.  No comment - unless they ask.  After all, it's no fun to hear someone's justifications of why what they are feeding their dc is totally appropriate.  Somewhere at heart, they know they are not doing right by the kid.
