As a teacher of writng for children with or without special needs and as a homeschooler, I found that there are numerous ways. Here's a list (hopefully this would be helpful to you)
1. Let your child keep a journal (diary) it's good to get comfortable with writing and this is a good way to do this
2. Reading teaches writing (having a supply of a variety of literature around is a good way to expose children to different forms of writing, quality writing, writing technnigues, and genres)
3. Mini lessons or workshops on grammar concepts are good for children (have them make their own grammar books, filled with grammar concepts etc, its fun to decorate, illustrate, and yes, use for reference.
4. Creating/self publishing a book of poetry, a ficiton book, non-fiction book, this is always fun to do (it's cheap to bound a book at kinkos or staples
5. Have them make their own magazines!!!! This could cover ANY subject.
6. Take them to book signings/readings at the local book store/cafes, let them meet real authors/writers
7. Become knowledgeable about the process of writing (brainstorming, drafting, editing/revision, final drafts) |
