A New DVD Adventure in Vermont

My wife has been assigned to a Burlington office for six months.  We decided to make the best of it and rented a vacation home in Stowe.  Our 10 year-old daughter has been in a Christian School (in Georgia) using the A-Beka program for the past three years. I thought it would be best to use the A-Beka home schooling program for this semester we'll be gone.  I have taken on the teaching responsibility using the DVD program and all the books.  Although I appreciate the convenience of the DVDs, I am concerned about the lack of my child's interaction.  Has anyone used the A-Beka DVD program? Could you provide some insight and/or advice?  Thanks.

That sounds fantastic!  We were in Burlington and Stowe last year, during a trip.  (Love looking across from Burlington to the Adirondack mountains in New York.  They look beautiful.)   We did not use A-Beka, so don't have information on that, but we did homeschool while travelling.  I would call ahead, perhaps to the Von Trapp Lodge and ask if anyone there knows of a local homeschool group.  We have called ahead to towns where we were going to be -- places to call that have worked for us are: libraries, large churches, and book stores.  We tell them what's happening, that we are coming to town and would like to get together with a local homeschool group--do they know of any?  Usually someone does!   When we get in contact with them, again, we tell them our story and ask if any field trips will be happening while we're there, that we could join in on--or book clubs, or roller-skating events, things like that.  It's great to meet other homeschoolers while travelling.  In Vermont you could do a unit on maple sugaring, the artist Grandma Moses (her work and one-room schoolhouse is in the Bennington Art Museum), the illustrator Norman Rockwell, and the Green Mountain Boys from the American Revolution--not to mention - the Appalachian Trail.  There's so much in Vermont!   Wish you the best.

VVAGT, Thanks for the advice.  I'll enjoy putting it to use.  -As for your mention of the Appalation Trail...  We spend 2-3 weeks on it each year. In June we were in New Hampshire.  Thanks again.

I haven't used the dvd Abeka myself, but a friend of mine says her daughter did it and really felt that she

was part of the class. It seems good for core subjects. Then you can be freed up to do the more demanding

classes like Science and well whatever you love to do. Vermont would be great place to do hands on history. It is so

rich with it. Not to mention NH and other states. Good luck living there. I was born there and have always loved it.
