    Isolated

We are going to homeschool a 6 yr old in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.  Public school there is not a good fit.  Granny is trying to help get it set up from Oregon!  It seems that Broken Bow doesn't have a lot of resources or opportunity for social contact.  A skating rink and a library exist.  My daughter and son are new to that town and would like to make contact with other homeschoolers.

    Hi Anri,

Welcome to the Forum!  Gosh, I have no idea where Broken Bow is!  Sometimes homeschoolers are SO isolated that they get much of their support online, so I'm glad you found us.

It looks like there are a few big groups in OK.  Maybe you could network with them to find something closer to you.  The first is Oklahoma Christian Home Educators Consociation  at www.ochec.com.  Another is Christian Home Educators Fellowship of OK at www.chefok.org.  On the secular side there is Home Education Alliance at http://homeschoolblogger.com/HEA, Home Educators Resource Organization at http://www.OklahomaHomeschooling.org, and Shawnee Home Educators at www.shawneehomeeducators.org.

Have fun surfing these sites and I hope you come up with some great ideas.  Come visit with us often!

We are in a similar situation, not a new one for us.....we moved 6 times in 4 years and always seem to be looking for friends!  Try the local churches, they usually have at least a few homeschoolers.  Also talk to the librarian at your library....he or she would know if there is a local homeschool group, or may have met other homeschoolers and parents who visit the library.  Often you can leave your number with a librarian and ask them to have another homeschool mom or dad give you a call.  That's where I've had luck in the past.  Good luck to you!

    Hi Anri:

I just signed on but wanted to let you know that I know exactly where Broken Bow is.  I lived in DeQueen, Arkansas (just over the line) for eleven years.  In fact, my family went to the dentist there in Broken Bow.  Been a long time since I've heard the name though.  I am homeschooling my granddaughter (first year to do so).  I'm not sure about the schools in Oklahoma but my son graduated in DeQueen and actually (at least then) it was a pretty good school.  He had an excellent English teacher his senior year, was in the band, etc.  I also know how hard it is to begin living in a small town after coming from a large city.  At first I felt lost and lonely but it does get better.  I remember when I first moved there, people would wave as we drove by and I'd ask my husband if he knew them.  They were just being friendly.  Like I said though, it was quite awhile back (during the 80's).  I would hate to hear that the friendliness has changed.  Anyway, I don't know if this helps but hope it does.  We started going to church in DeQueen and met a lot of people.  I wasn't a "church person" at the time but learned a lot and met a lot of nice people.

Good luck to all of you!

Hello Christine, Thank you so much for your quick help! I will check out the ones that sound like the best fit for us. Broken Bow is way down in the S.E. corner of OK . I, the Granny, have never been there, but I am told it is beautiful, near a lake and resort. I am trying to help sort out everything from Oregon! Thank goodness for the internet! P.

    Hello, flsissie,

Thanks for your comments.  Actually, my daughter moved from a rural area in Oregon, but close enough to towns for quite a few options.  Homeschooling is popular here in Oregon and, yes, people do still wave at everyone!  I suspect its the same in Broken Bow.

Lucky you, getting to homeschool your grand daughter!

I would love to do that for mine, but I will try to send things and help from a distance. Good luck with your own schooling experience.

Dear Burnett Family, Thank you for responding. Wow! At least you have a school like a turtle has a shell, it travels along with you and children don't have to go through all that breaking in at public school each time. I e-mailed the librarian this morning, but haven't heard back yet. Perhaps when my daughter actually goes in. Thanks for the good wishes.!
