Homeschool Community

I am very new and I need a little help. I have decided to take my daughter out of public schools and home school her. It has been a VERY long time since I have done algebra and I have minimum finances to acquire items, we are getting ready to move here shortly due to my husband joining the coast guard. Is there any web sites that I can go to to acquire material for free or very inexpensively to teach my daughter? Unfortunately this site does not start out with pre-algebra, and my daughter has never done any type of algebra. She is on an IEP and came to me about doing home school to try and catch up in grades, she's 17 and in the 10th grade currently. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Nice to "meet" you!  I have a couple of ideas for you.  You may have to try out a couple of things to find what works for you, but here goes.

There is a neat, free online site at www.oldfashionededucation.com.  They have several free algebra resources there to try out.

Also, your public library probably has lots of algebra books.  I just checked the catalog at mine and there is even Algebra for Dummies!  (I could use that book!)  Our library even has teaching courses on tape of intructors teaching an algebra class. 

In terms of programs, if you find something you might be interested in, look to buy in used.  Ebay often has Math-U-See and other programs listed very reasonably.

Thank you for some advice! I will look into those areas today. It has been along time coming for us. Just before the christmas break another student decided to bring a knife to the public school my daughter was attending and wanted to stab her with it. That's when I started looking into homeschooling her! Then yesterday she came home from school so upset, and told me that it was really bothering her being 17 and only in the 10th grade and asked if we could try and homeschool to get her further along or even graduated. We will go to the local library today and check out what kind of algebra books we can find & I will look at a few other places to & let ya know.

www.kineticbooks.com has a very reasonably priced online algebra course.  www.courserpository.org and www.hippocampus.org have algebra classes - online lessons, but you need to find and buy one of the textbooks they list.
